Visit to the Periyanayaki Amman Temple at Devikapuram

Vandavasi-Chetput 1 Vandavasi-Chetput 2

Location:

Devikapuram is to the West of Vandavasi; to the East of Polur; to the South of Arani and to the North-East of Thiruvannamalai. While going from Vandavasi, after Nedungunam (covered in my just previous post), you will reach Chetput and go beyond in the same road towards Polur to reach Devikapuram. The temple is located by the right side of the main road.

Distance:

From Vandavasi:
Chennai (Adayar) to Vandavasi (via Uthiramerur/Thennangur) – 108 km
Vandavasi to Chetput – 27 km
Chetput to Devikapuram – 13 km

From Arani:
Arani to Chetput – 24 km
Chetput to Devikapuram – 13 km

From Polur:
Polur to Devikapuram – 15 km

Quick facts:

Amman: Periyanayahi amman, also called Periya Nachiyar and Brahathambal (associated with Kanagagreeswarar in the nearby hilltop temple)
Theertham: Sivaganga Theertham

Legend:

Once Parvathi devi came to Devikapuram during the pralaya period. She saw a small hill was coming down with a golden shine floating in the pralaya floods which stayed here as Golden hill. Parvathi devi then stayed here and worshipped Lord Shiva at the hill with the Kasi Viswanathar lingam on a Shivarathri day and Shiva appeared to Her as a Swayambu lingam. Devi stayed at the Periyanayahi amman temple exclusively.

Significances:

  • The 2nd biggest temple of Thiruvannamalai district, next only to Thiruvannamalai temple
  • One of the few exclusive (big) temples of Amman like Kanchi Kamakshi and Madurai Meenakshi
  • An exquisite sculptural marvel

Temple:

The temple had its Kumbabhisheham in 2003 after the one in 1889. It measures 475 feet east-west and 450 feet north-south with 30 feet temple walls and 150 feet 7 tier Rajagopuram. There is a big open space in front where there is a 4 pillar high-ceiling Urchav mandapam and another one in the form of a chariot by the side of which the temple car is standing by. Both the mandapams house many sculptures. The big temple with the vast empty space, the mandapams in front and the village streets present a picturesque atmosphere. I visited the temple in the afternoon and saw plenty of cows were being brought to this open space for milking. The other 3 sides of the temple are heavily encroached upon with shops. Once these 4 streets must have been used very freely for running the temple car and the huge and beautiful temple walls should have been visible. Now we can only be consoled that at least the front empty space is spared.

From inside the temple Rajagopura Sculpture - Dwara Balahar

We are welcomed by the big Dwarabalahas on either side of the Rajagopuram entrance and as you enter there are beautiful sculptures on either side of the inner walls of the Rajagopuram.

Rajagopura Sculpture 1 Rajagopura Sculpture 4
Rajagopura Sculpture 5
Rajagopura Sculpture 6 Adhikara Nandhi at the entrance, the best of all

There are sculptures of Lingothbavar, Narasimhar, Kaala Bairavar, Dancing girls etc., and the most beautiful one of them is the huge and stunningly beautiful Adhikara Nandhi. What a great sculptural work it is!

Vandalised Sculptures of the Rajagopuram

Ironically, some of the sculptures have been vandalized also. It is said that this vandalisation was by the foreign invasions but I strongly doubt it since they would not have left this beautiful temple untouched except for this front portion. These should have been the handiwork of our own people especially due to the fact that these have happened only outside the main entrance door.

Honey Combs at the Ceiling of the Rajagopuram Entrance

There were plenty of honeycombs (about 20) in the ceiling. It is said that sages live as birds, bees and snakes in the temple to protect the temple treasures and worship.

Nandhi

There are three praharams inside the temple. As you enter the 3rd praharam, on the left side there is a temple tank and a 4 pillared mandapam and on the right side there is an Open air Auditorium called Variyar Mandapam and a Kalyana mandapam in the form of a Chariot being pulled by the horses. In the Kalyana mandapam there are sculptures explaining the story of Manuneethi Chola who killed his son under the wheels of his chariot just to keep up the justice as a King. Dwajasthambam, Balipeetam and Nandhi Devars are present here. One Nandhi is present at an elevated height and just below another one is sitting on the ground. Maybe, the abhishehams are taking place to the Nandhi at the ground?

Maha Mandapam at the Inner Entrance

As we go further, we enter the 36 pillared Maha mandapam with a 5 tier, 2nd stage Rajagopuram. The fact that each pillar houses sculptures on all the four sides and also there are exquisite carving works on the ceiling and the pillar tops indicates the magnanimity of the sculptural works of the temple. After crossing the Maha mandapam we enter the 2nd praharam which houses Navarathri kolu Mandapam and Artha Mandapam which again houses plenty of sculptures. There are about 55 inscriptions, most of which belong to the Vijayanagara Empire and are in the 2nd praharam. As we go further the Dwarabalahis are present on either side of the entrance and you will enter the 1st praharam and the sanctum sanctorum. Periyanayahi Amman is present majestically in standing posture with Pasa Angusam in her upper hands and Abhaya and Varatha mudhras in the lower hands.

Kanagagreeswarar hilltop temple

The temple is associated with the nearby Kanagagreeswarar temple at the hillock top. The Gurukkal was not all that helpful to show me this temple and so I could not visit it. Maybe the Lord wants me to keep coming over there. At 8AM everyday, there is an abhisheham for Kanagagreeswarar with ghee and hot water and so it is better to go in the morning so that you can visit both the temples. There is a Murugan shrine in this temple on whom Arunagirinadhar has sung Thiruppugazh. The sanctum sanctorum houses 3 lingams – one Kasi Viswanathar installed and worshipped by Parvathi Devi, another Swayambu lingam and the third one made of Rudhrakshas (since two lingams should not be there).

  1. Omkareshwar temple visit

I recently travelled to omkareshwar last week. I travelled to shirdi and then travelled to omkareshwar.

There is no direct train to Shirdi and hence I need to
Travel to kopargaon which is 17 kms and you will get regular share autos who will charge 40 Rs.

There are lot of trains from kopargaon to khadwa which is important connecting line in MP.
We( travelled along with my friend) got down at 4.30pm and bus stand is just 1 km away and you can walk easily.

Lot of frequent buses available for indore which is around 65 kilometres from omkareshwar road. We got down in omkareshwar road and from there took regular bus which will charge rs 15 to reach the temple. If u r travelling in a group you can take a auto who will charge 200 rs.

We took accomodation in Gajanan Maharaj ashram. One of the best in omkareshwar where they will charge 450 for 4 beds and food is also provided at nominal charges ( lunch & dinner for rs 35 and breakfast for rs 15). Narmada resort is another excellent plac to stay in and it is charged at 1200 per night. Aashirwad is one more budget accomodation.

We first visited omkareshwar temple and you need to cross a bridge to reach the temple. This is more like an island and you can buy Pooja articles for rs 50 and thirtam to do abhishekam. I prefer you go on your own and do not take any guide and there will be lot of pandits around who will charge you.

You can walk down thru ghat to reach Narmada river and on the way see Panchamukhi Ganesh temple and govindeshwar temple and this is the place where aadi Shankaracharya got Deeksha from his guru Govind Bhagavad pad. This is very small temple very close to the river. This ghat is known as Kottirth ghat and situated exactly under main temple.

All other temples are on other side of omkareshwar temple and I see lot of people doing Parikrama walking barefoot around the entire the entire temple. We reached ashram and had lunch as it is only till 1.30 or 2pm.

We again started at 4pm and first went to Malleshwaram temple and it is one of the oldest temple and Yatra will not get completed if one doesn’t visit this temple. Vradheswar temple is in the the same premises and here you can see statues of 24 avatars kept here.

Brahmapureeswar temple is very close to this and then we went to Vishnu temple which is on the way to Annapurna temple. Excellent place and pleasant atmosphere.
I met one local person in the temple and he explained me that this place is very special as all 3 temples are there( Lord brahma,Lord Vishnu & Lord shiva).

We then visited Annapurna temple and took bath. You will not see much crowd here and you can spend maximum time.

We again went for one more Darshan at 7.30 to omkareshwar and returned back to room.

Please some info about Rani Velu Nachiar – a Naicker Clan Queen
She was an 18th century Indian Queen from Sivaganga. Rani Velu Nachiyar is the first Queen of Tamil Origin to fight against the British in IndiaShe was the princess of Ramanathapuram and the daughter of Chellamuthu Sethupathy. She married the king of Siva Gangai and they had a daughter – Vellachi Nachiar. When her husband Muthuvaduganathaperiya udaiyathevar was killed, she was drawn into battle. Her husband and his second wife were killed by a few British soldiers and the son of the Nawab of Arcot. She escaped with her daughter, lived under the protection of Hyder Ali at Virupachi near Dindigul for eight years. During this period she formed an army and sought an alliance with Gopala Nayaker and Hyder Ali with the aim of attacking the British. In 1780 Rani Velu Nachiyar fought the British with military assistance from Gopala Nayaker and Hyder Ali and won the battle. When Velu Nachiyar finds the place where the British stock their ammunition, she builds the first human bomb. A faithful follower, Kuyili douses herself in oil, lights herself and walks into the storehouse. Rani Velu Nachiyar formed a woman’s army named “udaiyaal” in honour of her adopted daughter — Udaiyaal, who died detonating a British arsenal. Nachiar was one of the few rulers who regained her kingdom and ruled it for 10 more years.
On 31-December-2008, a commemorative postage stamp on her was released.
Velu Nachiyar is the first queen who fought for the freedom against British in India and succeeded.
British Army stored volumes of ammunitions within Rajarajeswari temple underground and Kuyily First Human Bomb was utilised by Rani velu Nachiar. All of the Nachiar Army poured oil on Kuyili and at last Kuyili set herself ablaze within the temple to destroy the British Weapons. The British got defeated and gave an undertaking in writing that they will not enter Velu Nachiar Regime thereafter.the undertaking is still in a British Museum.
The same Rajarajeswari Temple is still there within Sivaganga Palace and opened for public only on Function days.
Socalled Kattabhommans,Jhansi Ranis who were defeated & killed by British are being heavily flashed by Media wheres Rani Velu Nachiar has not been remembered not even in a small way in our country.
See how a small team of local ladies/girls had fought for our freedom against British and succeeded. It is a pity that now we are being globalised against the sacrifices of those.

  8. The photographs are really impressive, Thanks for the same.

It is not only a temple, we can consider Devikapuram as another Mahabalipuram without sea and seashore.

Although this temple and the place has many more special features and histories, still most of the people are unaware of these things…this is an unfortunate thing. But I think this can be minimised through your photographs and briefs, I believe.

Unfortunately Raju is not visited the Kanagaeeswarar Hill top temple. Mr.Raju you must visit. During my visit to the Hill temple I find that one Survey point is fixed at the Hill top temple. This is perhaps G.T.S (Great Trigonometric Survey) point fixed by the British surveyors Lampston and Everest during the period 1830 – 1900. This Devikapuram is beautiful place for the students of Architects and Civil Engineers.

1)Is there any other name for lord kanagagireeshwar? Is it Giri gireeshwar?

2)The hot water abhishegam is performed on only lord kanagagireeshwar or other 2 lingams as well ?
